Overview of Deep3

The story begins with Demian, a first-year high school student and star basketball player, aiming for the NBO, the highest-level basketball league in the world of the story, similar to the real-life NBA.

However, after an injury, Demian develops the yips, a condition that causes his upper body to freeze suddenly during play.

Unable to play near the basket because of the yips, Demian finds a path forward through three-point shots from far away from the goal: deep threes.

The story moves through Japanese high school, an American junior college, and transfers to a university, drawing you in and making you want to keep reading!

About the creators of Deep3

The manga artist of Deep3 is Ryosuke Tobimatsu.

Mitsuhiro Mizuno, who handles the original manga story and writing, is also involved.

I researched Ryosuke Tobimatsu’s background as much as I could, so I’ll summarize it here.

Born in 1987. Graduated from Osaka University of Arts.
He made his serialization debut in Monthly Spirits!, then serialized work in Weekly Big Comic Spirits, and began serializing Deep3 in 2021.

Other representative works include Bull Tackle (2017) and Ten o Iru (2019).

Mitsuhiro Mizuno works as a writer, screenwriter, and manga story author, and appears to have worked on the script for Honest Real Estate.

The appeal of Deep3’s characters

Image of a basketball play scene

As mentioned above, the main character is Demian.
Demian is a high school student born to an American father and a Japanese mother.

Many other appealing characters appear as well, so I’ll mainly pick out the ones who caught my attention!

Captain Mano from the same high school
Hatano from Chikugo Daini
Father: Byron Green
NBO: Irvin Johnson
Gauchos PG: Bruce
Gauchos center: Joe
Gauchos SG: Chris
Gauchos PF: Rashid
Bulldogs PG: Steve
St. Naismith center: Tyler
St. Naismith SF: AJ
St. Naismith SG: Kyle

At the very least, the characters above are highly appealing, and there are many moving scenes and lines.

What I find appealing about Deep3

A story that makes you eager to see what happens next

Because the story moves intensely through repeated setbacks and successes in Japan and the United States, it really makes you want to read the next volume.
Rivals who were once enemies become teammates, and despite clashing with each other, they aim for the top.
This is something you do not often see in other basketball manga, so I find it very rewarding to read.

The cast is packed with strong characters!

Many appealing characters appear among teammates, rivals, and family members.
Beyond the story itself, I found the depth of the cast extremely appealing.

The personalities of the characters create moving scenes that can stand alongside basketball manga such as Slam Dunk.

The lines stay in your heart

“The yips can’t be cured.” If that’s how it is, then so be it.

I practiced more than anyone in Japan.
Live with the unfairness of still not being able to win.
For the rest of your life.

And more.
Not only the story and the passion of the characters, but also the power of the words is why Deep3 draws me in.

Which publisher releases it?

The publisher is Shogakukan, and it is serialized in Big Comic.
As of August 11, 2025, the manga has been released up to the latest volume, Volume 12.

I summarized ratings, reputation, and reviews for Deep3

I summarized both positive and negative reviews to look at Deep3 objectively!

I’ll roughly summarize the types of comments I often saw below.

  • (5.0) The artwork was detailed and interesting
A working adult who is new to manga
Because it is set around the NBA, there is a lot to learn. It is also interesting from the perspective of learning about American culture. This manga encourages me to try a little harder in daily life!
  • (5.0) I love this work!
Even though there is a lot of criticism, I love this work.
I find it fresh and enjoyable to watch a gifted protagonist struggle with the yips while growing step by step, along with the rough American basketball scenes that feel different from Japan.
  • (5.0) The appeal of modern basketball strategy is expressed beautifully
It is not the type of sports manga with special moves, but it depicts realistic basketball where tactical decisions lead to victory, supervised by “be a baller Hallelujah,” known for NBA commentary.
The challenge of a mixed-race young man aiming for the NBA is portrayed very realistically.
  • (5.0) The mental portrayal really hits home
The players’ struggles and the process of rebuilding themselves are carefully portrayed, and the pacing with the game scenes feels comfortable. I ended up reading it all at once.
  • (4.0) It stands apart from previous basketball manga
Because it is not set in Japan, the fast development feels fresh compared with previous basketball manga.
The protagonist grows while searching for his path, so it may not suit people who like stories where the hero dominates, but if you are curious, I hope you will read it!
  • (4.0) I bought it online because it was not available in bookstores
I bought it online because I could not find it in bookstores. I think it is interesting, but I wonder if it is not popular?
  • (4.0) There are many tactical terms, but they are easy to understand
The explanations of pick-and-rolls and zones feel natural, and even people without experience can follow along. Sometimes the explanations are long, but overall I am satisfied.
  • (3.0) The story is good, but the pacing is uneven
There is a difference between chapters where the psychological portrayal really hits and chapters that move slowly. It is the kind of work that becomes more immersive when read in batches.
  • (2.0) It keeps dragging along outdated Showa-era-style settings
The story depicts the growth of a player fighting the yips, but the outdated Showa-style setting feels disappointing.
  • (1.0) I wish it would not treat the yips so lightly
I am dissatisfied with manga that treats the yips lightly. There are many memorable scenes, but the content feels lacking, and the NBA elements are also insufficient.

Opinions are fairly divided, but many people who find it interesting and get hooked seem to praise it highly!

Searching for the manga Deep3 with keywords such as raw or zip is very dangerous

Searching for manga using raw or zip keywords is very dangerous

When trying to read manga on the internet, many people search using keywords such as “raw” or “zip,” but this is truly dangerous.

Below, I’ll write about the dangers and legal issues.

Risk of viruses and malware

Downloading manga files from unofficial sites carries a very high risk of infection with viruses or malware.

Many of these files are unauthorized scans of legitimate publications, and the sites that provide them often have insufficient security measures.
Simply opening a downloaded file can install malicious software on your computer or smartphone, potentially stealing personal information or damaging files.

Copyright infringement and legal risk

Downloading manga through “raw” or “zip” files almost always violates copyright law.

Manga is a creative work, and its creators and publishers hold legally protected copyrights.

These copyrights prohibit works from being copied or distributed without permission. Downloading manga without authorization infringes on creators’ rights and can deprive them of income.

Copyright infringement may also be subject to criminal penalties or civil lawsuits, leading to fines or legal action.

Ethical perspective

Purchasing or viewing manga and other creative content through proper channels directly supports creators.

Revenue is returned to authors and publishers only through legitimate purchases, so please avoid illegal methods.
If the manga industry declines, there may come a day when we can no longer read manga.
